Structural Steelwork
Devonport Library
Structural steelwork for a brand new, highly detailed and beautifully finished council library incorporating many architectural features.
Challenges:
Global were asked to erect the Glulam timber structure which the structural steelwork fitted in and around. The timber is the final finish on show and required a high level of care and skill.
Detailing the job involved liaison between the Architect, Engineer and Glulam timber manufacturer to ensure all components would fit together seamlessly.
Working around the 130-year-old Moreton Bay Fig trees on site meant limited access and extreme care.
Facts & figures:
50 tonnes of structural steelwork.
Glulam timber connection plates, braces and fastening installed by Global.
Over 200 hours of detailing before manufacture.
A high-performance coating system was applied over galvanised steel.
The Devonport Library was awarded an Excellence Award and a Merit Award at the 2015 NZ Property Council Awards. It was also a finalist in the Public Library of the Year Awards for the annual International Federation of Libraries Association.
